What is a Slipped Disc?

A slipped disc is when the soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out and presses on one of the spinal nerves that make up the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain along the course of the nerve, known as sciatica.

In some cases, you may not know that you have a slipped disc because not all slipped discs cause symptoms.

Do You Have These Symptoms of Slipped Discs?

Slipped discs can occur as a result of an injury carrying a heavy object or a strain, but often there’s no obvious cause.

Some of the common symptoms include:

Sudden or gradually progressive pain in the lower back

Pain radiating from the lower back or buttock, down to the leg or even the foot

In some cases, the symptoms may worsen in specific postures, such as sitting or trying to stand up, twisting the spine or bending forward. Some form of relief is often achieved with rest and gentle exercises. In cases with severe symptoms, proper diagnosis and treatment are generally recommended.

Get The Right Slipped Disc Treatment That Gives You Lasting Relief

At Oxford Spine & Neurosurgery Centre, we provide a range of treatments that can help relieve you from your pain and improve your quality of life.

Medications

Medications can help relieve the pain temporarily and keep you moving.

Physiotherapy

A physiotherapist will design a suitable rehabilitation programme to correct your posture, strengthen the back muscles, and improve flexibility.

Pain Intervention Treatments

In certain conditions, spinal injections can be performed to relieve pain. This would typically be a nerve block with local anaesthetic and steroid medication.

Other procedures include blocking the pain impulses from the discs or joints between the bones in the spine or procedures to shrink disc bulges.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

A minimally invasive procedure to address the cause of the nerve compression and relieve the pressure on the nerves. Minimally invasive surgery has benefits such as less bleeding, less complications, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
